Geez Struth m8, i didn't know you were into rubber ???!!! You and i should get together one day !!! Hehehehe.....NOT !!! The way it's raining here at the moment, i may need that rubber dinghy. To answer your question about my ping rate, we are using a wireless capable modem and my wife uses it for her laptop but i'm running ethernet cable from the modem to my computer. I think i'll stay with Bigpond for a while and see how everything goes.
I think you'll stay with Bigpond because you don't have an effen choice...!
Hi Mullet.
Yeh m8, i think you're right there. Actually, this is where i need some advice. I have no idea how these things work but i'm gathering if i go to wireless, then at some point, then wireless signal ends up going down a normal copper phone line? I'm trying to read between the lines but there's a lot of equipment that my signal has to go through on the wireless side of things ? As it is, i live 25km out of Mackay. On the other hand, if i stay with just the phone line to send my signal and choose to go with another ISP instead of Bigpond, then my signal has to go through all their equipment as well ? The way i look at it, i'm better off staying with Bigpond as it's their equipment all the way ? Am i right in supposing this ?? I'm thinking it's better the devil you know than the devil you don't know !! But then......I COULD BE WRONG !! Oh Gawd....who said that dirty word ?? Hehehe.
Cheers....Dave.
All the equipment is probably Telstra's. Other companies only rent the ports at the exchange to on-sell to you anyway... but i don't think it has much effect on the quality of the line you get, they're all in the same building on the same switch board (i think..). Like the only two main factors that might effect your speed and reliability are length of line, and quality of the physical line itself.
Obsywan is the one to talk to. (M$ Hotmail or whatever his silly handle is today...) He ran his own WISP in Bendigo here in Vic so he knows how it all works.
I"m still stuck on the $4800 bit..... My I7 + GTX570 rig only cost me $1400 ish and its kick ass. OK I've got to ask what's the UPS set you back ?
You don't get syetm bragging rights until you can clok 7.9 across the board with WEI.
Now unfortunately to get 7.9 for your CPU, you will need to overclock it to the blistering speed of 5mhz. God luck with anything less than liquid nitrogen.
Like he says, cost is relative, I should know, it cost me alot of money to move far enough away so that my relatives no longer visit, and worth every cent.
If you have ADSL already then you're doing good. If you are experiencing issues with throughput or latency there are a number of things you can test.
Here is a little bit of theory on the Line Length vs. Signal Attenuation: http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/ADSL_Theory_SNR
Based on the length and quality of your line (thanks mullet) you can calculate what your maximum upload and downloads speeds can be. There are charts for that like such: http://www.internode.on.net/media/im...sl2-dist07.jpg
You may be able to roughly measure the length of your phone line by measuring a drive from home to the local telephone exchange or you can ring your provider, they /should/ be able to tell you, sometimes it makes their brains melt. If I'm looking for the distance of any line I ring internode on 136633 and someone on tech support or sales can tell you if you quote your phone number.
Now if you believe you're modem is not syncronising with the DSLAM at the exchange at the data throughput rate you were expecting you can further search whirlpool for instructions how to have your modem print out it's sync rate (along with other useful data like signal strength/noise, attenuation etc) in a web browser. If the sync rate (raw upload/download speeds) is nothing like what was idicated on the above chart then begin looking at the wiring from where the line enters your property through your house to the wall socket and any leads from the socket to your modem. Ensure you have an ADSL(2+) filter on every phone in your home. (In my case, I installed a Central Splitter/Filter where the line enters my premesis and situated the modem there to bypass any questionable wiring in my house.)
If you find the sync rate normal but you aren't seeing the desired download rates on your PC or if you are finding the connection unstable, compare the continuity of service with your PC against your wife's laptop. If the issues are consistant on both computers, there may be an issue with your line between your home and the exchange.
If you are still experiencing any of the above issues after this or you need help obtaining your ADSL sync+etc stats from your modem/router we can arrange a time on TeamSpeak and I'll be happy to assist you further.
BTW, a PSU == Power Supply Unit (e.g. 1400W situated in your PC) is not a UPS == Uninterrupted Power Supply.
